Al Sieradski – Artist statement

I am a retired mathematics professor from the University of Oregon.  I carve contemporary abstract sculpture.  My goal is to provide viewers a meditative and calming experience:

In my work, I hope to elicit a viewer’s feelings, rather than thoughts, with a soothing response to harmony, coherence, and flow, in short, rhythm.  I believe that experiencing visual rhythm can be therapeutic.  In this way, I offer shape therapy or sculptural art for well-being.

Rather than eliciting thoughts from a viewer’s left-brain or right brain, I hope to evoke emotions from their second brain - the system of over a half a billion neurons lining the gut that regulates mood and influences behavior.  Every environment should have some healing space and I’m carving my heart out to contribute to the cause.
